The Alps of Grobnik—A Juncture of Rocks, Views, and Hiking Tradition
The Alps of Grobnik are the mountain range that spreads along the edge of the Grobničko polje, marking a unique hiking area in Rijeka’s hinterland. The massif consists of 16 peaks of different height, shape, and accessibility, labeled and marked by trail blazes. Together they form the recognizable landscape with interlaced grass-covered slopes, stone rocks, woodland sections, and open views toward the Kvarner, Gorski kotar, and the distant Velebit.
The tallest peak is Obruč (1377 m), and the most famous and most visited Hahlić (1097 m), right next to the eponymous mountain hut located at the altitude of 1097 m. The hut has been renovated, equipped with renewable energy sources, and it’s open to visitors throughout the year. It marks the initial point for plenty of hiking trips, round tours, and multiday expeditions. Just under the lodge, on a small plateau, there are three ponds—watering holes favored by wildlife. It was exactly after these ponds, which used to carry the name of “Kalići”, which turned into “Hahlići” in the local dialect, that the whole area got its name.
The mountains of the Alps of Grobnik are growing more and more popular with hikers, runners, cyclists, and recreationists. Many of the paths give themselves well to mountain running, so several trail races are held here during the year, ranging in difficulty and distance. In addition to natural diversity, this region offers interesting geomorphological shapes, like the rocky hillsides and deep fissures. The canyon of Mudna dol is especially remarkable, separating the east and the west parts of the massif.
Every peak has its own character—a few are rocky and bare, others covered in forests and confined, while some offer wide panoramic views spreading from Učka to Velebit, across the Kvarner Gulf and the islands. Such variety awards visitors a chance to choose the path and peak in tune with their own capacity and preferences—whether they’re looking for tranquility, a physical challenge, or just some relaxed time in nature.
Every hike here offers something special—a view, some peace, silence, or simply the feeling of being where nature still holds sway.
