Maraschino Bottles and Marschino liqueur

Maraschino is a trade mark of Zadar for several centuries, a beverage made out of cherry marasca, a tree brought to the Zadar region during the time of Roman Empire. The company that produces the beverage is Maraska and it has a strong link with the tradition and the development of the city and the port of Zadar. Maraschino gained worldwide fame as early as the 18th century when it began to be exported across Europe and beyond.

Maraschino bottles are distinctive due to their unique appearance. As early as the 19th century, Zadar distilleries, particularly those of the Luxardo family, established the tradition of hand-woven bottle coverings. This weaving technique, using straw or thin reeds, served a dual purpose: protecting the glass bottle during transport and providing an aesthetically recognizable look.

Classic Bottle Design was tall and slender, often featuring embossed markings.

Historically, the labels on the bottles had a classic design with elegant lettering and the producers’ crests.

Today, Maraschino is still sold in traditionally woven bottles, but modern versions with minimalist designs also exist. However, the classic bottle with its hand-woven covering remains a symbol of this Zadar beverage, instantly recognizable on store shelves worldwide.

Maraschino bottles are not just packaging; they are part of Zadar’s rich cultural heritage. Their distinctive look and centuries-old tradition make them one of the city’s symbols, while the liqueur itself remains an essential part of Zadar’s history and identity.
