Calm of the Mythic Sea – Telašćica Nature Park
Telašćica Nature Park, located in the southern part of Dugi Otok, is one of the most valuable protected areas of the Croatian Adriatic. Its exceptional geomorphological diversity, rich plant and animal life, and the long-standing coexistence of humans and the landscape give this area significant natural and cultural value. The park encompasses three key components: the spacious Telašćica bay, impressive cliffs, and the salty Lake Mir, a unique natural phenomenon connected to the sea through underground limestone cracks.
Telašćica Bay is one of the safest natural anchorages in the Adriatic, sheltered from winds and surrounded by maquis, pastures, and ancient olive groves. In contrast to its tranquility, dramatic cliffs rise to 160 meters above the sea on the outer side of the island, while steeply continuing below the water’s surface to a depth of about 90 meters, creating an exceptionally valuable underwater relief.
Lake Mir is characterized by elevated summer temperatures and variable salinity, which favors the development of specific biological processes and makes it an important natural laboratory. In addition to its natural values, the park also preserves a rich traditional heritage – dry stone walls, shepherd’s paths, wells, and olive groves that testify to the centuries-old life of the islanders.
The Grpašćak Interpretation Center, located on the edge of the cliffs, plays a special role in interpreting the area, providing visitors with a deeper understanding.
