Church St. Nicholas

The Church of St. Nicholas, known locally as Muster, stands above the town of Komiža on the island of Vis and dates back to the 13th century. Originally a Benedictine monastery, it has been expanded over time and now features a five-nave structure with Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque elements. In addition to its religious role, it served as a fortified refuge against pirate attacks. The church is especially known for the annual celebration of St. Nicholas on December 6th, when an old wooden boat is ritually burned in front of the church as a symbol of protection for seafarers.
