Factories in fishing history
Fishing factories in Komiža, particularly the Neptun factory, played a key role in the town’s development during the 20th century. Established in the 1920s, Neptun was one of the most significant industrial facilities on the island of Vis. It specialized in processing bluefish, especially sardines, which were canned and exported throughout Europe and beyond. The factory employed many local residents, particularly women, and formed a crucial part of Komiža’s economic life. Today, the old Neptun factory building stands as a testament to the town’s rich fishing and industrial heritage.
