FISH MARKET GATE
The Fish Market Gate (Vrata od Ribarnice) was the city gate through which one entered the northern part of the city harbour. The decision to construct it on the eastern city wall was made in 1381. In historical sources, due to its size, it was recorded under the name “Porta Magana”.
The preserved monumental gates are made in the Gothic style, with a niche above the portal that contains a statue of Dubrovnik’s patron-saint, St. Blaise, by an unknown sculptor.
On the inside, they have a stone groove as an additional security measure, used for inserting wooden beams during dangerous times to prevent the gates from being opened by force from the harbour side.
