NAVAL LOGGIA

The Naval loggia (Mornarska luža) was located next to the Ponta dock (gat Ponta), south of today’s fish market. According to archival sources, it was constructed in 1502. It was a covered space used by sailors as a meeting point and a shelter during the night or bad weather.

Initially, sailors used the loggia built in 1441, located on the south eastern ground floor of the Rector’s Palace, next to the Romanesque Ponta Gate (Vrata od Ponte), but with the construction of the so-called inner Ponta Gate in 1463, it lost its function.

The Ponta loggia (Luža na Ponti) was demolished in 1837. during the Austrian rule.
