The Rječina—A Natural Oasis Within Easy Reach of Rijeka

The Rječina is a river which has played an important role in the life of the city of Rijeka for centuries—it supplies its drinking water, but also offers a space to relax, take a walk, and escape the rushed pace of life. It springs from the ground under the hill of Kičelj, close to the settlement of Kukuljani, and meanders downhill for 18 kilometers, all the way to the Bay of Rijeka.

It is exactly this part of the flow which attracts visitors the most, due to its walking path which offers the chance to enjoy the view, the sound of water, and the quiet of nature.

The area next to the spring is especially noteworthy—cool, clear water, the temperature of which keeps stable throughout the whole year, between 9.5 and 10 °C. The area around the spring is surrounded by forest and a macadam path, which makes it convenient for an easy stroll or a ride by bicycle or quad. There is enough space to rest, hold a picnic, or spend a little family time in nature, at the leisure area by the spring. Additionally, the area is also suitable for educational excursions, nature photography, and school and NGO fieldwork.

Though not big in size, the Rječina has a strong impact on the landscape and the people who live next to it. Its waters are a home to numerous fish species, including Black Sea salmon, carp, grass carp, minnow, rainbow trout, bighead carp, tench, and European eel. Such natural diversity talks in favor of a water quality and ecosystem which have been conserved.
