TRIANGULAR DOCK

In between the Penalty tower (Kaznena kula) and the Great Arsenal (Veliki arsenal) there used to be the Fontik, a grain warehouse and market, in front of which there was a triangular dock, likely built in the second half of the 13th century to protect the tower from wave impact. A mooring bollard was installed on the dock for securing ships that anchored in front of the Fontik.

The dock was separated from the shore, so it could only be accessed by a small boat. In the mid-19th century, it was connected to the shore, and it is likely at that time that a tide gauge scale was marked on its submerged wall to measure sea level. The remains of the triangular dock were discovered in 2003 during the reconstruction of the collapsed waterfront in front of the arsenal.
