Mooring iron bollard
In February 2024, a historic bollard believed to date back to the Austro-Hungarian Empire was recovered from the seabed near the western part of the pier on Zadar’s Waterfront. The operation was conducted by the Zadar Port Authority. Following its retrieval, the bollard was transferred to the International Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Zadar, where it will undergo desalination and preservation before being displayed as part of the city’s maritime heritage.
Experts conducting preliminary examinations have determined that the bollard is well-preserved and largely intact. It is believed to have ended up in the sea during the Allied bombing of Zadar in World War II, which damaged the pier. Further research is being carried out to determine more details about its exact origin. Once all the elements reveled the iron bollard will be presented to the wider audience and tourists visiting the region as un original and yet unknows hidden treasure of the Port of Zadar.
