The Trabocchi Coast: charm, history and nature suspended over the sea
Along the Teatine coast, between Ortona and Vasto, lies the poetic Trabocchi Coast, a stretch of coastline where jagged rocks plunge into the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea and ancient wooden fishing machines, suspended over the sea and connected to the mainland by narrow walkways, enrich the coastal landscape, capturing the attention and curiosity of anyone who approaches them. These trabocchi, authentic symbols of Abruzzo’s seafaring heritage, tell a story of tradition and mystery: their origins are still shrouded in myth, with hypotheses linking them to Phoenician fishing traditions, while their first documented appearance dates back to the Middle Ages. The writer Gabriele D’Annunzio described them as ‘colossal spiders’, living, fairy-tale creatures that inhabit the sea, and today some of these ancient machines have been transformed into restaurants suspended over the water, where you can enjoy a unique gastronomic experience, savouring typical dishes in an unrivalled setting.
But the Trabocchi Coast is not only history and culture, it is also a natural gem that is home to seven protected reserves, including Punta Aderci and Ripari di Giobbe. Punta Aderci stands out for its dunes, rare bird species and the majesty of Punta Penna, while the Ripari di Giobbe is a less accessible but totally unspoilt reserve, characterised by wild beaches and an atmosphere of profound calm, ideal for lovers of birdwatching, hiking and outdoor picnics.
The coast is ideal for sustainable exploration thanks to the Via Verde, a 42-kilometre-long cycle and footpath that follows the route of the old disused railway line and connects Ortona to Vasto. This flat route passes through illuminated tunnels and skirts trabocchi (fishing platforms) and hidden coves, offering surprising and unexpected views of the sea. The promotion of slow tourism is at the heart of this regional project which, with initiatives such as “Bike to Coast”, promotes environmental awareness and is ideal for those who want to enjoy a relaxed journey immersed in nature.
Another way to discover this unique and fascinating place is, of course, by sea, as suggested by the route “By boat to discover the Trabocchi Coast between Abruzzo and Marche“, included in the national project “Scopri dove ti porto” (Discover where I’ll take you).
To complete the picture, the coastal villages overlooking this landscape tell stories of art, culture and memory: Ortona with its medieval centre, the majestic Cathedral of St. Thomas and the Aragonese Castle; San Vito Chietino, Rocca San Giovanni and Fossacesia, with their authentic views and timeless atmospheres, offer a rich and intense visiting experience.
The Trabocchi Coast, both on land and at sea, is always a continuous discovery.
